Fascinating Fungi Feature in Agronomist & Arable Farmer
Fungi are amazing organisms. Back in July, Mark spoke to an enraptured audience in the Soil Association tent at Groundswell explaining, in simple terms, what fungi do in the soil and why we should care.
Different fungi do different things, but some of the keys roles from a farming perspective include:
Making nutrients in the soil available to plants, and other soil life Making the ‘glue’ that allows soil to aggregate, improving porosity and root growth Providing drought resilience with better water retention Improving plant health and competing with pathogensWhat can we do to make the most of these fungi? One of the simplest actions to boost fungi in your soils is to adopt cover crops or living mulches. By maximising the amount of photosynthesis going on above ground, you maximise the sugars made available underground – feeding the fungi and supporting a thriving soil community your crops will benefit from.
Mark shared his fascination with fungi, their roles and recommended actions with Agronomist & Arable Farmer, you can read the whole article here: https://www.aafarmer.co.uk/agronomy/fascinating-fungi-form-the-basis-of-soil-health.html
